Do Bollywood films distort marriages?

Following the premiere of “Mrs.,” a Bollywood film starring Sanya Malhotra and directed by Arati Kadav, there has been a lot of controversy on social media.

Some praised it for examining the crushing weight of patriarchy and the invisible labor of women in traditional households, while others labelled it as an example of “toxic feminism”.

The film was a Hindi adaptation of the 2021 Malayalam smash The Great Indian Kitchen.

With different perspectives, actress Kangana joined the issue, even claiming that Bollywood films are ruining the Indian marital system.

Kangana asserted that marriages are in the best interests of the weak, notably the elderly and newborns, rather than a purpose of gaining attention or acceptance. Citing the shastras, she underlined how previous generations fulfilled their duty to parents and elders without inquiry.

The actress blamed Bollywood for corrupting “ideas of marriages” and remarked,”Too many Bollywood love stories have distorted the ideas of marriages, marriages should be how it has always been in this country, it always had a purpose and the purpose was Dharma which essentially means duty. That’s it, do your duty. That’s it, do your duty and move on, life is too short and fast, if you try to get too much validation or footage you will end up alone with your therapist.”
