Prithviraj Sukumaran’s mother defends him amid L2 controversy

Veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran has spoken out strongly against the backlash her son, actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, has faced in connection with the L2: Empuraan controversy. In an emotional message, she condemned the attempts to paint Prithviraj as a “scapegoat,” dismissing claims that he acted without the knowledge of key figures involved in the film.

Taking to Facebook, Mallika expressed her disappointment over the allegations that Prithviraj had misled superstar Mohanlal and producer Antony Perumbavoor regarding the film’s content. She firmly denied these accusations, labeling them as baseless media-fueled narratives.

“Some people are deliberately spreading the idea that Prithviraj deceived Mohanlal and the producers regarding Empuraan. Knowing the truth behind the scenes, it deeply pains me to see my son being unfairly isolated,” she wrote in Malayalam.

She clarified that every key decision—including script approval and scene selection—was a collective process involving Mohanlal, Antony Perumbavoor, and the entire team.

“They all read the script together. They all watched the scenes being shot and approved them. So when the film is released, how can Prithviraj alone be held responsible?” she questioned.

Mallika firmly reiterated that no aspect of the film was concealed from Mohanlal or the producers and that any controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan was a shared responsibility, not just her son’s burden.

The L2: Empuraan controversy

Directed by Prithviraj and starring Mohanlal in the lead role, L2: Empuraan has been embroiled in controversy since its release on March 27. The debate centers around certain scenes linked to the 2002 Gujarat Riots, which have sparked widespread discussion.

Following the backlash, producer Gokulam Gopalan announced that the team had decided to make 17 cuts to the film, with a revised version scheduled for re-release next week. In response to the controversy, Mohanlal issued a public apology, expressing regret for any unintended distress caused to fans and audiences.
