Saira Banu, the estranged wife of Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman, has made a heartfelt plea to the public and media, urging them not to refer to her as his “ex-wife.” The statement came hours after news broke of Rahman’s brief hospitalization in Chennai due to dehydration and chest discomfort, a situation that has since stabilized.

In an emotional voice note shared through her spokesperson on Sunday, Saira addressed the speculation surrounding their relationship, which has been under scrutiny since the couple announced their separation in November 2024 after 29 years of marriage. “Assalamualaikum. I wish him a speedy recovery. I received the news that he had chest pain and underwent an angiography, and by the grace of Allah, he is fine now,” she began, expressing relief over Rahman’s recovery.

Saira then clarified their marital status, saying, “I want to tell all of you that we are not officially divorced. We are still husband and wife. It’s just that we are separated because I was not feeling well for the last two years, and I didn’t want to stress him too much. But please don’t say ‘ex-wife.'” She emphasized that her decision to separate stemmed from her health struggles, a burden she chose not to impose on the celebrated musician.

The couple’s separation had initially shocked fans, with Rahman sharing a poignant note on social media last year: “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end.” Despite their time apart, Saira reiterated her unwavering support, adding, “My prayers are always with him. I request everyone, especially his family, to not stress him too much and take care of him.”

Rahman, who returned from London on Saturday night, was admitted to Apollo Hospital after feeling unwell, with doctors attributing his condition to dehydration and fasting during Ramzan. His family, including his sister and son AR Ameen, confirmed that the visit was precautionary, and he has since been discharged.

Saira’s plea has sparked conversations online, with many praising her grace amid personal challenges.

The couple, married since 1995, share three children—daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen—who have also requested privacy during this period. As Rahman recovers and the family navigates this “fragile chapter,” Saira’s message underscores a bond that, while strained, remains unbroken in her eyes.
