In a major push for urban expansion, the Telangana government has announced the formation of the Future City Development Authority (FCDA) to oversee the development of a new “Future City” between the Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam highways. This ambitious project will span approximately 30,000 acres, covering seven mandals and 56 villages to create a well-planned urban center.

The decision was formally approved during the recent Telangana Cabinet meeting, with Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy providing key details in a press briefing. He also revealed that the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) jurisdiction has been extended to the Regional Ring Road (RRR), significantly expanding its coverage.

The newly included area will now encompass 1,355 villages, 104 mandals across 11 districts, and 332 revenue villages, marking a significant step in Hyderabad’s metropolitan expansion.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s vision

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is spearheading the development of this Future City, drawing inspiration from the Cyberabad model, which played a crucial role in Hyderabad’s IT boom. Given its proximity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad, the government envisions the new city as a strategic urban extension that will boost real estate growth, economic activity, and planned infrastructure development.

As part of this vision, the government has already sanctioned the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion to this proposed city. While the city itself is yet to take shape, work on the metro rail extension has already commenced, demonstrating the government’s commitment to long-term urban planning.

Building on the legacy of previous governments

The initiative follows in the footsteps of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and former Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), who led extensive urban infrastructure projects over the past decade. Under their leadership, Hyderabad saw the development of numerous flyovers, improved road connectivity, and expansion in key suburban areas like Kokapet, Narsingi, Rayadurg, Patancheru, and Maheswaram, transforming them into thriving urban centers.

With this new project, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy aims to leave his mark on Hyderabad’s future, positioning the Future City as his flagship urban development initiative. His administration is keen on creating a legacy project that will redefine Hyderabad’s growth trajectory and reinforce its status as a global metropolis.
