Actress Payal Rajput, best known for RX 100 and Mangalavaaram, has landed in hot water after her recent comments on nepotism in the film industry sparked a heated debate online. Her remarks about favoritism overshadowing talent have led to intense trolling, with many questioning her stance.
Taking to X on Tuesday, Payal expressed her frustration, writing: “Being an actor is one of the toughest careers. Each day begins with uncertainty, as nepotism and favoritism often overpower raw talent.”
She further lamented how opportunities seem to slip away to those with industry connections. “I watch roles go to people with famous last names or influential agents and wonder if my talent alone is enough.”
Her candid words quickly went viral, triggering a wave of mixed reactions.
While some praised her for speaking out about a long-debated issue in the industry, many netizens weren’t convinced. Critics accused her of playing the victim, with some questioning her own career trajectory.
One user remarked, “If nepotism was the only problem, why aren’t you a bigger star despite opportunities? Maybe it’s about talent and choices too.” Another added, “Complaining won’t get you roles. Work harder and prove yourself.”
Many pointed out that nepotism in Telugu and Tamil cinema is predominantly an issue for male actors, as there are very few female stars from film families actively dominating the industry. Unlike Bollywood, the South Indian film industry has limited instances of star daughters overshadowing newcomers.
Some cited names like Shruti Haasan, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar, and Manchu Lakshmi Prasanna but argued that their presence has not significantly affected opportunities for other actresses.
This led to questions about whether Payal’s struggle was truly about nepotism or other industry challenges.
Despite the backlash, Payal is moving forward with her career. She is set to appear in a Tamil film opposite Legend Saravanan and another Telugu film.
While this isn’t the first time Payal has faced online criticism, the intensity of the trolling over her nepotism remarks has been particularly fierce. Whether she chooses to respond further or let her work speak for itself remains to be seen.
