80% of the IT workforce in Hyderabad is overweight

The IT workforce in Hyderabad remains a high-risk group for non-communicable diseases due to a significant prevalence of obesity.

A recent research study by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals in Hitec City revealed that 80 percent of the IT workforce is overweight.

“Overweight and obesity have also emerged as a national issue,” states Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, founder chairman of AIG Hospitals. The prominent physician, at a seminar on obesity, stated that AIG Hospitals did a survey in Hyderabad’s schools, revealing a significant prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among children.

Forty percent of students in public schools are afflicted with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), underscoring the necessity for immediate intervention.

Obesity is not merely a future issue; it is a current catastrophe.

“If we fail to intervene at this juncture, the strain on personal health and the healthcare system will become insurmountable,” Dr. Reddy stated.

“Obesity is not solely a Western concern; 60 percent of Indians are overweight, and 30 percent are progressing toward obesity,” he stated.

He cautioned that obesity exacerbates problems impacting the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys.
