BJP leader Rekha Gupta was sworn in Thursday afternoon as Chief Minister of Delhi in a grand oath-taking ceremony at the city’s Ramlila Maidan.

Rekha Gupta is the first-time MLA. The central BJP leadership appointed her as the new Chief Minister, adhering to the conventions of Delhi’s political landscape.

She succeeded Atishi Marlena as the caretaker Chief Minister, marking a historic occasion as she becomes the fourth woman to assume this role.

Parvesh Verma sworn in as her Deputy Chief Minister, while Vijender Gupta, recognized for his tenacity against AAP, would assume the role of Speaker of the Delhi assembly. Kapil Sharma, Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Ravinder Indraj Singh were also sworn in to the new cabinet.

Strategic move

Arvind Kejriwal governed the state for a decade. However, the AAP leader became embroiled in legal issues and subsequently resigned as Chief Minister, allowing his party colleague Atishi Marlena to assume the position. Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit, and Atishi have served as chief ministers of Delhi; the BJP continued the practice of selecting a female leader as the new chief minister, despite her lack of legislative experience.

Rekha Gupta’s appointment, despite certain controversies, including an allegation of vandalism, highlights the BJP’s strategic decision on leadership in Delhi.
