Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief Pawan Kalyan appears to be making a decisive shift away from cinema, prioritizing politics over his long-standing career in Telugu films. Popularly known as the “Power Star”, Kalyan has signaled that his role in governance and public service now takes precedence over the silver screen.
Since founding JSP in 2014, Kalyan has been an influential figure in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape. His stature grew significantly following the 2024 elections, where the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—comprising JSP, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—secured power in the state. As Deputy CM, Kalyan oversees Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, and Environment, actively shaping policies and governance.
Recent developments suggest that cinema, once central to his identity, is no longer a priority. Recently a media outlet reported speculation that Kalyan might permanently step away from films after completing his current project, Hari Hara Veera Mallu, a period drama, which is set for release on May 9, 2025. Sources close to him indicate that his increasing political responsibilities leave little time for filmmaking.
“Pawan Kalyan’s focus is on Andhra Pradesh’s development and fulfilling JSP’s promises to the people,” a party insider revealed. “Cinema was a way to connect with the masses, but politics is now his true mission.”
Kalyan’s commitment to politics was evident during a recent JSP event in Vijayawada, where he passionately spoke about his Vision 2047, a plan to mentor 100 young leaders for India’s future. “I entered politics not for votes, but for societal transformation,” he declared, echoing sentiments from his March 15 speech at the Jana Sena Jayakethanam Sabha.
Kalyan’s film career, which began in 1996 with Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi, has been marked by both blockbuster successes like Gabbar Singh and disappointments like Agnyaathavaasi. His sporadic presence in films has led to contrasting opinions on social media—some fans joke about his cinematic missteps, while others praise his political transformation.
Known for bankrolling successful projects like “Bheemla Nayak” with Pawan Kalyan, producer Naga Vamsi’s remarks have sparked discussions about Kalyan’s cinematic future amidst his burgeoning political career. In a recent interaction with the media, Naga Vamsi clarified his stance on Pawan Kalyan’s role in the milestone 50th film for Sithara Entertainments.
“We should wish for Pawan Kalyan garu to do something for the state and the country, not just ask him to do films.” Naga Vamsi’s comments suggest a shift in perspective, emphasizing Kalyan’s contributions to governance over entertainment. “He’s beyond cinema now. A bigger role awaits him in Indian politics.”
Kalyan’s actions as Deputy CM reinforce his political commitment. From spearheading a statewide crackdown on drug misuse to advocating for Sanatan Dharma, he is taking an increasingly hands-on approach to governance. His 11-day penance in October 2024 over the Tirupati laddoo controversy further solidified his image as a leader blending cultural values with political duty.
Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi, who officially stepped away from politics in February 2025, expressed confidence in his brother, stating at a film event: “Pawan will fulfill my vision and mission in politics.”
While Kalyan has not officially retired from films, his trajectory suggests a definitive shift. With JSP’s growing influence within the NDA and his increasing responsibilities in state governance, it seems his Power Star status is now shining brightest in the political arena. He will complete both “OG”, a gangster drama and “Hari Hara Veera Mallu.” While “Hari Hara Veera Mallu” will hit the theaters in May 2025, “OG” will release in the latter half of 2025. From 2026, he will not discuss films.
Whether he will ever return to cinema remains uncertain, but for now, Pawan Kalyan’s script is being written in the halls of power, not on the big screen.
