The Andhra Pradesh Police have officially concluded that the death of Hyderabad-based Christian preacher Pagadala Praveen Kumar, popularly known as Pastor Praveen, was the result of a self-inflicted road accident, dismissing widespread speculation of murder.

Eluru Range Inspector General of Police (IG) G.V.G. Ashok Kumar announced the findings at a press conference in Rajahmundry on April 12, putting an end to weeks of controversy surrounding the pastor’s demise.

Pastor Praveen, aged 45, was found dead on March 24 near Konthamuru village, close to Rajahmundry, beside his Royal Enfield motorcycle. The discovery sparked tensions, with Christian groups and some political factions alleging foul play, citing the pastor’s history of receiving threats due to his outspoken defense of Christianity.

Meticulous investigation: IG

However, IG Ashok Kumar stated that a meticulous investigation, involving forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and witness testimonies, confirmed the death was accidental.

According to the IG, Praveen was under the influence of alcohol during his journey from Hyderabad to Rajahmundry, having purchased liquor at three locations—Hyderabad, Kodad, and Eluru—verified through UPI transactions and CCTV footage. The investigation revealed that Praveen was involved in three minor accidents en route, including incidents at Jaggayyapeta and Keesara, where his motorcycle’s headlight was damaged. Despite warnings from traffic police and witnesses to rest, he continued riding, ultimately losing control on a gravel-strewn road near Konthamuru. The forensic report confirmed that Praveen’s motorcycle skidded, throwing him off and causing fatal head injuries. No evidence of vehicular collision or external assault was found.

The IG added that Praveen’s family, including his wife Jessica, expressed no suspicion of foul play, further corroborating the police findings.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. While some Christian groups continue to question the investigation, citing alleged inconsistencies like facial injuries and a reported shoe mark on Praveen’s chest, the police have clarified that no such mark was found, and the injuries were consistent with a high-impact fall. The IG also warned against misinformation, stating that 11 individuals have been booked for spreading false narratives on social media, with one arrest made.
